His skills led him to make friends with Antwan Patton, now popularly known as Big Boi, and the two high school students formed the group Outkast. Upon graduation, the duo, which had generated local enthusiasm around them, was signed to the Atlanta-based record label LaFace Records, through which they released their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik in 1994. The album went platinum, earning the group the title of Best New Rap Group of the Year at the 1995 Source Awards.
