David West Biography
David West was born on August 29, 1980, in Teaneck, New Jersey, as David Moorer West to Harriet and Amos West. He attended Garner Magnet High School in Garner, North Carolina before moving to Chatham, Virginia, where he enrolled at the Hargrave Military Academy. He played basketball for his school and as a senior, first-team earned all-state awards.
He then attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he played for the Xavier Musketeers basketball team. West was dominant in his first year when he led the Atlantic 10 rebounding conference and finished the season as a fourth-highest scorer on his team. He was then appointed to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
David West continued his dominance in his second year, this time leading the team in points, recoil, and blocks. He also had five 20-point and 20 rebound games during the season, making him the undisputed winner of the A-10 Player of the Year award. He won the award again in his junior and senior years, becoming the first three-time recipient.
Other notable college accomplishments include being named three times to the First-team All-Atlantic 10, Consensus First-Team All-American (2003), AP National Player of the Year (2003), and National Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association (2003).
After a very successful college career, West was selected with the 18th overall pick of the New Orleans Hornets in the NBA Draft 2003. After two seasons of getting used to professional basketball, West finally began to live up to expectations as his performances in the 2005-06 season earned him second place in the NBA Most Improved Player Award.
His statistics continued to improve in the following season, with thirteen 20-point games and five 30-point games. This continued in the 2007-08 season, which led to him being selected for the NBA All-Star game. In the 2008/09 season, West scored an average of 21 points per game, resulting in his second All-Star appearance.
David West played a total of eight seasons in New Orleans before leaving the last year of his contract in June 2011 to become a free agent. Following the termination of the NBA lockout in 2011, West joined the Indiana Pacers with a two-year contract worth $20 million. At the end of this contract, West resigned with the team as it had built a team that could challenge LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference. However, after losing back to the rear conference finals, West decided to pull out of his contract to become a free agent again.
His next stop was San Antonio, where he only played for Spurs for a year before deciding on the Golden State Warriors. He was an important banker on the side when they entered the playoffs as top seeders before winning the 2017 NBA Final against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
David West’s Net Worth
David West currently earns the veteran minimum salary of $2.3 million from the Warriors. But his net worth is far higher than this figure, estimated at around $28 million, thanks to his previous NBA contract, which allowed him to take home around $6 million each year.
