You may know Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films in which he plays the superhero War Machine, or as Marty Kaan from the Showtime sitcom House of Lies, among many other roles in which he won or was nominated for a prize.
The all-rounder, who is also director, producer, and author, has not limited himself to the roles behind or in front of the camera. He is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme. Together with other Hollywood stars like George Clooney and Brad Pitt, he founded the Not On Our Watch Project, which brings worldwide attention and resources to stop, prevent and then help victims of mass cruelty.
Don Cheadle was born on November 29, 1964, in Kansas City, Missouri, as the middle child of Donald Frank Sr. and Bettye Cheadle. He attended a number of schools while growing up because his family moved around a lot. These include Hartley Elementary School in Lincoln, Nebraska, and East High School in Denver, Colorado.
Cheadle was very active in the theater department as a child. He performed in plays and pantomimes and was also part of a jazz band in which he played the saxophone and was an active choir member. It was no surprise that Cheadle moved to California after graduating from high school in 1982 to attend the California Institute of the Arts, a university dedicated to visual and performing arts students. He completed his studies with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts (acting).
Cheadle had already started working as an actor during his school days, taking over small parts of television programs and making stage appearances at the same time. He played in the comedy “Moving Violations” and then in shows like “Fame”, “L.A. Law” and “Hill Street Blues”.
The first remarkable role he played in 1992 in the short-lived spin-off of “The Golden Girls” with the title “The Golden Palace”. In the same year, he received a recurring role as a prosecutor in the series “picket fences”. In 1995 he was cast together with Denzel Washington in the movie “Devil in a Blue Dress”. His role in the film brought him much recognition and two awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics for the best supporting actor as well as several other nominations.
From then on, Don Cheadle’s career went from top to bottom. On his way, he received many awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe Award for his work in the Rat Pack and a nomination at the Academy Awards for Best Actor for his role in Hotel Rwanda. Cheadle’s reach spans all genres from drama to high-profile action blockbuster movies. Other films and series he has appeared in over the years include Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Crash (2005), Hotel for Dogs (2009), Iron Man 2 (2010), House of Lies (2011 – 2016) and many others.
Cheadle was not satisfied with what he had achieved and gone one step further to write and make films. He made his directorial debut in 2016 in the film “Miles Ahead” about the jazz musician Miles Davis. He also wrote and played in it.
