Biography

Gerrit Alan Cole was born in Newport Beach, California, on September 8, 1990, the son of Sharon and Mark Cole. As a child, Cole played a variety of sports but had a very strong interest in baseball because his father was a big fan of the sport. It also helped make Cole look very good in the sport, which led him to focus exclusively on the sport in high school.

Cole then attended Orange Lutheran High School, wherein his sophomore year, he did not run in 45 innings for the school baseball team. In his junior year, Cole began to attract national attention when he was able to throw a fastball at 151 miles per hour (94 miles per hour). In his final year of high school, young Cole led his school to an 8-2 record with 121 strikeouts in 75 innings. This earned him a selection for the USA Today All-USA High School Baseball Team, but most importantly, it sparked the interest of the New York Yankees, who awarded him 28th place in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.

While the Yankees reportedly put together a tempting offer for Gerrit Cole to join them right after high school, he decided to accept a baseball scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After playing college baseball for UCLA, Cole participated in the 2011 MLB Draft, where he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first overall selection. After signing, Cole pitched for the Arizona Fall League (AFL) Mesa Solar Sox before joining the Bradenton Marauders of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League for the 2012 season. After a string of impressive games with the Marauders that earned him an all-star selection in the Florida State League mid-season, Cole moved up to the Altoona Curve of the Class AA Eastern League. A few months later he was promoted again to the Indianapolis Indians of the Class AAA International League by the Pirates.

In June 2013 Gerrit Cole finally made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom he played until January 2018, when he was transferred to the Houston Astros.

Height and Weight

In Major League Baseball, there are very few pitchers whose height is either 6 feet or less, as the record books show that the most successful pitcher in the history of the game is always above that number. In MLB today, the average height of the pitcher is said to be 6 feet 2 inches. Gerrit Cole measures two inches more than this with a height of 6 feet 4 or 1.93 meters. He also weighs about 109 kg or 240 pounds.
