Helena Bonham Carter Bio

If she were to follow in her ancestors’ footsteps, Helena Bonham Carter, who was born on May 26, 1966, in Islington, London, England, could have become a political figure. Her own father Raymond Bonham Carter (1929 – 2004) was a British banker who was a member of a British political family and worked in the Bank of England. Another famous political figure in her bloodline was her paternal grandmother, Violet Asquith, who was also a feminist icon. Asquith was the daughter of H. H. Asquith, who served as British Prime Minister during the first half of World War I.

Although born in Islington, Helena and her two older brothers Edward and Thomas grew up in Golders Green. She attended South Hampstead High School and Westminster School, which she completed with the Matura. Helena wanted to attend Kings College in Cambridge, but the school authorities feared that she might drop out of school to pursue her passion, which she has pursued since elementary school.

Her first high-profile boyfriend/partner was a British actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh (pictured above). Helena was with him for five years from 1994 to 1999. Their love aroused great media interest, as it was the result of Branagh’s extramarital affair. At the time they started dating, Branagh was married to the British actress Emma Thompson. Thompson and Branagh had met during the filming of the BBC series Fortunes of War, whereupon they entered into a life-long alliance in 1989.

Five years later, in 1994, Branagh met Carter on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and they began an affair together. A year after their romance began, Branagh ended the relationship with his wife and continued his romance with Carter. However, it was not planned that it would last a lifetime, as they went their separate ways in 1999.

Emma Thompson, who married Greg Wise in 2003, forgave Carter for the extramarital affair she had with her then-husband. Both even appeared together in the Harry Potter series. On the other hand, Branagh seemed to have finally found what he wanted in director Lindsay Brunnock, whom he married in 2003.

After two years of healing from her relationship with Branagh, Helena found love in the arms of American filmmaker Tim Burton. Like her previous relationship, she began on a film set. Burton had cast her in his 2001 science fiction film Planet of the Apes. After that, he cast her in at least 6 of his films, including Alice in Wonderland.

Since they lived in neighboring houses in Belsize Park, London, they combined the two into one home. Helena and Burton got together for 13 years but were never married. Their relationship ended amicably in early 2013. Their long relationship produced two children: a son named Billy Raymond Burton, born in October 2003, and a daughter named Nell Burton, born in December 2007.
