Honolulu-born Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa was born in Hawaii on August 1, 1979. He spent most of his growth in Iowa, where he attended high school. He graduated in marine biology from the university, but eventually switched to wildlife biology. By this time Jason had returned to Hawaii where he was discovered by the famous designer Takeo Kobayashi who advised him to consider a career as a model. This event turned out to be a turning point in his life, as his flawless appearance and exceptional stature enabled him to achieve success as a model very quickly.

When he was 19 years old, Jason Momoa reached a new peak in his career as one of the few models chosen to strut on the catwalk for Louis Vuitton at the Governor’s prestigious fashion show; he was also named Hawaii’s Model of the Year.
