When she turned 16, she was fully prepared for an acting career. In the same year, she moved to Edinburgh to take a course in acting and performance at Telford College. During this time she was also trained by Scott Johnson, a well-known theater director. At 18 she moved to London to study at the hallowed Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.

Her focus was so great that in the first year of her studies she even turned down an offer from a model agency for a modeling contract to concentrate on acting.

In 2006, during her first year with Italia Conti, Karen opened her acting portfolio with her first television appearance, which was a guest appearance in an episode of the drama television series Rebus as Teri Cotter. In 2008 she continued her guest appearances with Harley Street and Coming Up. In the same year, she appeared as Ginny Turner in the TV short film Stacked.

Her career began to take off when she appeared for two years, beginning in 2008, in the sketch comedy series The Kevin Bishop Show. She also appeared in several episodes of BBC Two’s horror project The Well. In the same year, she became part of her biggest project so far. She joined the cast of the BBC’s successful television series Doctor Who. Here she played Amy Pond, the companion of the eleventh doctor, played by Matt Smith. During her time at Doctor Who she was also involved in other projects. She was Ally in Outcast (2010), Jean in We’ll Take Manhattan (2012), Jane in Not Another Happy Ending (2012), and Kaylie Russell in Oculus (2013), for which she moved to the United States.

Her growing reputation continued to make room for bigger roles. In 2014 she portrayed the villainous character Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The role required Karen Gillan to shave her hair, an experience she later described as liberating. She would take up the role again three years later in the sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

She continued to appear in other films and television series such as TV on the Radio: Happy Idiot (2014), Selfie (2014), 7 Days in Hell (2015), Robot Chicken (2015), and Emo Dad (2016).

The actress has no siblings, as she is the only child of her parents Marie Paterson and her father John Gillan, who had a career as a singer and recording artist. Karen grew up in a Catholic home but does not practice Catholicism or any other religion.

Karen has had some relationships in her time. The best documented was her relationship with the British photographer Patrick Green. The two began dating in 2006, which confirmed their relationship with the public somewhat later. They were seen together in public a few times, but they kept their relationship relatively low-key. After six years together, they finally separated in 2012.
