Karolina Pliskova is a former number 1 tennis player in the world, the first person ever to reach this ranking without ever winning a Grand Slam tournament. The ten-time singles and five-time double WTA champion from Czech is also known for being half of the first set of twins who have ever won a doubles title together on the WTA Tour.

Karolina Pliskova is the daughter of Radek and Martina Pliskova. She was born on 21 March 1992 in Louny, Czechoslovakia, as a twin sister. During their adolescence, the Plíšková girls fell in love with tennis after watching players such as Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, and Marat Safin playing the game before they decided to play professionally.

Karolina Pliskova announced her arrival on the world stage for the first time at the 2010 Australian Open of Juniors, which she won. Her first appearance at a Grand Slam tournament of the senior national team was at the French Open 2012, where she lost to Marion Bartoli in the first round. The following year, Plíšková celebrated her first WTA Tour victory on the hard courts of Kuala Lumpur at the 2013 Malaysian Open. The same year she won her first doubles at the Generali Ladies Linz tournament in Austria.

In 2014, the Czech superstar experienced a breakthrough as she made it to the finals in addition to several semi-finals and quarter-finals. During this time she also won two tournaments, the Korea Open and the Generali Ladies Linz, which catapulted her to number 24 in the world rankings by the end of the year.

In 2015, Karolína Plíšková is aiming for the leap into the top 10. At the beginning of the year, she defeated the former world number 1, Victoria Azarenka, in the first round of the Brisbane International Tournament. Then she reached the final of the Apia International Sydney 2015, which she lost before she was eliminated in the third round of the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia. Then she reached the final of the Duty-Free Championships 2015 in Dubai, beating Ana Ivanovic. There were a number of other remarkable performances before Plíšková won her fourth WTA title in her career at her home tournament in Prague. At the end of the year, she was leading in the final rounds after making it to six places but only winning one. This meant she was one place too few to reach her goal, as at the end of the year she made it to 11th place in the world rankings.

Plíšková continued her performances in 2016 and especially beat the Williams sisters on their way to the final of the US Open, where she lost to Angelique Kerber. Thus she not only managed a hat-trick in the Fed Cup with her Czech teammates and won the Western & Southern Open, but also ended up in the top 5. The following year, however, Karolína Plíšková managed to reach the number 1 position in the WTA world ranking list after reaching the semi-finals of the French Open.

Karolina Pliskova’s twin sister, Kristýna, is also a professional tennis player. Kristýna, who is two minutes older than her former world number 1 sister, has a career-high individual placement with world number 35, which she reached in July 2017. With one single and three doubles titles, she also holds the record for the most aces (31) in a WTA Tour match. This in addition to her nine singles and eight doubles titles from the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Life was not exactly rosy for the tennis twin superstars. When they were 13 years old, their father, Radek Plíšková, was sent to prison for two years for tax evasion. After serving his sentence, Radek regained his freedom and was able to watch his daughters grow up on the biggest stages. However, in 2013 he was arrested again and sent to prison for one year.

Karolina Pliskova is married to her boyfriend Michal Hrdlicka, the presenter of her TV show and friend of the sports commentators. Pliskova confirmed years of speculation about her upcoming wedding when she announced at a press conference during the US Open 2017 that she has got engaged to Hrdlicka. The tennis star assured that she and her boyfriend, who had been together for three years before deciding on the next step, had actually got engaged during this year’s Wimbledon tournament but wanted to keep it a secret.

Later, the couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony in front of close family and friends in Monte Carlo in 2018. It is not clear in what capacity Hrdlicka works for his wife, but Plíšková has confirmed that the two have a professional and personal relationship.
