He hosts the YouTube channel Vsauce, which features videos on scientific, cultural, psychological, and philosophical topics as well as on games, technology, and other general topics of interest. In addition to being a YouTube personality, he is also an educator, public speaker, editor, comedian, entertainer, and Internet celebrity.
Michael Stevens’ Biography
Michael David Stevens is one of the two children of his teaching assistant mother and father of a chemical engineer, along with his sister Melissa. He was born on January 23, 1986, in Kansas City, Missouri, but grew up in Stilwell, Kansas, after his family moved to the city in 1991.
With well-read people and rich scientific background, he developed a passion for knowledge and was happy to acquire it. A student at Blue Valley High School, Stevens also developed his comic book personality. He participated in informative speech and drama club programs. Because of his seemingly insatiable hunger for knowledge, his father gave him the nickname Polymathematician.
After graduating high school, he went to the University of Chicago, where his interests expanded and he also devoted himself to video production and editing. In 2007 he edited and produced his first video on YouTube with the username pooplicker888. The video became popular on several video comedy websites such as College Humor and Funny or Die, which led to his realization that there is an audience for every idea, including his crazy ideas. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and English literature.
Following his insight, Michael Stevens produced short comic films about the candidates for the 2008 presidential election in the United States under the new user name CamPain 2008, and its content caught the eye of YouTube’s director of comedy, Ben Relles, who invited him to join the then online comedy group BarelyPolitical, where he became known for his role as a bearded nun.
In 2010, the bearded comedy genius launched his first channel, Vsauce, with an initial focus on video game comedy content until the popularity of his educational series DOT caused a distraction in focus. He believes that any subject, be it silly or banal, can easily turn into madness if you take the time to look closely, research and give your curiosity free rein. Moreover, he believes that if the right question is asked, anything can be made into a profoundly effective lesson. Finally, Vsauce developed into an educational channel that emphasized his passion for science, which led to his subscriptions falling out of place.
The channel also offers intense scientific theories and concepts from the real world, often interdisciplinary and of interest to laypeople. Some of his popular videos are: What is the resolution of the eye, what if the earth stopped spinning, why are things scary, what if you were born in space, and is your red the same as my red?
He also created two sister channels: Vsauce2 and Vsauce3 later in 2010 with completely different content, mainly Internet and video game culture, while the original channel was still dedicated to educational discussion. In addition, the latter channels are operated exclusively by Kevin Lieber and r respectively, while Stevens retains sole moderation and production of Vsauce.
Stevens worked for Google as a content strategist in London in 2012. There he focused on their YouTube platform and worked with other content creators to optimize the effectiveness of their videos. In addition to creating content and mastering YouTube, he added public speaking to his resume in 2013. He has given two presentations at TEDActive and TEDxVienna and has also spoken at other events such as VidCon, MIPTV, as a diabetes educator for Novo Nordisk and as a keynote speaker at FanFest in Australia, Singapore, and India.
He appeared as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s ABC Late Night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2014. In 2014 and 2017 he created and hosted the YouTube Red series Mind Field, which explores various attributes of human behavior. Michael also led the educational stage tour Brain Candy Live, a science-based stage show, along with another educator and television star, Adam Savage.
Throughout his career, he has worked with and shared time on-screen with prominent figures in the scientific community such as Bill Nye and Chris Pratt. His channel has also made him one of the most successful YouTubers with more than 13 million subscribers and 1.48 billion views. He is also recognized as a leader in the Internet-based popularization of science and education, and his channel has received several awards for his contribution to this. These include the Streamy Award for Best Science and Education Channel (2014, 2015), the People’s Voice Webby Award 2014 for Best News and Information Channel, and the People’s Voice Webby Award for Best Science and Education Channel (2015, 2016).
As Vsauce continues to grow and expand, Michael Stevens looks forward to seeing what the future holds for him while remaining curious and committed to his cause.
During his stay in London after his move in 2012, Stevens met and married his wife Marnie Hughes. The couple returned to America after their wedding in July 2016 and currently live in Los Angeles.
Michael Stevens has become a pillar of the online science and education world. As a result, he is well rewarded for his work in the form of net assets estimated at $5 million.
