Oscar De La Hoya is a name that will perhaps remain evergreen in the hearts of many Americans. The retired professional boxer is one of the most successful boxers the nation has ever had. His achievements are endless from winning the gold medal at the age of only 19 years, Oscar won 10 titles in 6 different weight categories.
The Golden Boy, as he is affectionately known during his heyday, was also popular with non-boxing fans thanks to his incredible contributions to society through many philanthropic efforts and of course his short but successful musical career.
Since his retirement from professional boxing in 2009, Oscar has continued to be active as a sports promoter through his Golden Boy Promotions. We take you through the highlights of his career and personal life.
Oscar De La Hoya Bio
Oscar De La Hoya was born on February 4, 1973, in East Los Angeles, California, the son of Mexican immigrants. Coming from a family of boxers, Oscar began boxing at the age of 6, idolizing 1976 Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Leonard. With his family around him to get him through the necessary training, Oscar quickly improved and at the age of 15, won the national 119-pound Olympic junior title and the following year the 125-pound title.
In October 1990 Oscar lost his mother, Cecilia Gonzales De La Hoya, to breast cancer. On her deathbed, she wished that her son would win Olympic gold. Inspired by his mother’s dream, Oscar focused heavily on training in the run-up to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. He fulfilled his mother’s dream by winning gold at the event and defeating the German Marco Rudolph. He became known as “The Golden Boy” and became a professional in the same year. His amateur record was 223:5.
Oscar won his first pro-match in the first round with KO. 12 fights later, he won his first World Championship title, the WBO title in super featherweight.
Oscar became one of the most popular boxers in the history of boxing. In a professional career spanning 16 years, Oscar earned a pay-per-view income of about $700 million. No other boxer has surpassed that amount, except Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao after their highly regarded fight in May 2015.
In addition to his boxing income, Oscar has also earned from other sources, most notably from his Golden Boy Promotions, founded in 2002. He has supported several brands, including EASports. In February 2008, Oscar’s Golden Boy acquired a 25% stake in Major League Soccer club Houston Dynamo. The former professional athlete has donated millions to various charities. His net worth is estimated at $200 million.
His Wife and Children
As is typical for rich athletes, Oscar De La Hoya has led a romance with many women in his life. He chose the Puerto Rican singer and actress Millie Corretjer as his wife, and the two were married in a secret ceremony in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 5, 2001. The two met in 2000 when Oscar was working on the recordings for his first studio album. While struggling to show passionate singing, Oscar’s producer Rudy Perez forced him to watch a music video of Corretjer, for which he had also produced. Oscar asked Millie Corretjer to star in his music video, and the rest is history.
The couple has two children together, who are birthday buddies. The first, a son, Oscar Gabriel De La Hoya Corretjer, was born on December 29, 2005. The second child, a daughter named Nina Lauren Ninette De La Hoya Corretjer, was born on 29 December 2007.
Oscar’s wife, born on April 18, 1974, is the granddaughter of Puerto Rican poet Juan Antonio Corretjer, who was once Secretary-General of the pro-independent Puerto Rican Nationalist Party.
Oscar De La Hoya has three other children from previous relationships. These include two sons, Jacob De La Hoya, who was born on February 18, 1998, and Devon De La Hoya, who was born on November 30, 1998. He has one daughter, Atiana Cecilia De La Hoya (born March 29, 1999) with his former girlfriend Shanna Moakler, the defending Miss USA 1995 titleholder. In total, Oscar De La Hoya has 5 children by four different women.
Is He Gay?
As can be seen from his many children by different women, Oscar De La Hoya’s sexual orientation is very heterosexual and not gay. However, the former professional boxer made many Americans think differently when in September 2007 a certain Russian model Mila Dravnel leaked photos of the Golden Boy in fishnet stockings and heels with a wig that looks like the ultimate drag queen.
Oscar denied the authenticity of the photos and experts even confirmed that the photos were digitally altered, but rumor has it that he paid the lady $20 million to buy her silence. Shortly afterward, another model, Angelica Marie Cecora, came out with details about a sex and drag party with the macho athlete.
Oscar, however, shockingly revealed in an interview with Univision in August 2011 that he was indeed the one in the photo. This again raised questions about the boxer’s sexuality, but Oscar accused his cross-dressing photos of cocaine intoxication. He said the photos were the result of his first tasting of the substance.
