The revered journalist was born William Laurence Davis in Chicago, Illinois, on 14 December 1965. His parents are named Janis and Jerry Davis, and he grew up in Alabama, in a town called Muscle Shoals. Rece attended the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in Public Affairs and Broadcast News in 1988.

His foray into sports journalism began while he was still at school. He began working as a freelance journalist, studio presenter and announcer for all media organizations that wanted to hire him. After graduating from college, Rece Davis worked for WRBL in Columbus, Georgia, where he held various positions until he left in 1993, including sports director, reporter and weekend news anchor.

His next job was with WYRT-TV in Flint, Michigan, where he was both one of the sports reporters and a host. His impeccable work at the station led to offers from several other sports news organizations, including ESPN, which he joined in March 1995. He worked as a reporter on the SportSmash show for ESPN2. He also hosted a number of other programs including NBA 2Night, RPM2Night and RPM 2Day.

Over the years, Rece Davis was promoted to a moderator at SportsCenter, where he provided television broadcasts and analysis for college basketball and soccer events, horse shows, and horse racing.
