His fascination with sports began at a young age and remained with him well into his college years at the University of Vermont, where he did an internship with the local channel WCAX, where he worked as a play-by-play man for the minor league baseball team, Trenton Thunder.

After graduating from the University of Vermont in 1997, Ryen Russillo wanted to become a sports analyst and commentator for the media, and although the exact timeframe of his early career is not known at this time, he began his career at WWZN, a local station in Boston, where he hosted the show The Die Hards. Ryen Russillo also spent time at another local radio station, WBCN, where he worked on commentary for the New England Patriots before and after the game.

After several years of switching from one local radio station to another, Ryen Russillo finally got his chance to play in the big league when he joined ESPN Radio in late 2000.
