The National Basketball Association (NBA) is full of talented basketball players who have the speed, skill, and stamina to gain an advantage over their opponents on the field and win games for their respective teams. Sam Dekker, who currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, can be considered one of those players to refer to when such comments are made about the NBA.
After an exceptional career in high school and college, Dekker has also proven that he can become a legend when he is injured at the casino. Read on as we learn some interesting facts about the Cavaliers’ power forward.
Sam Dekker Profile, Age
Samuel Thomas Dekker is the son of Carol Dekker and Todd Dekker and was born on May 6, 1994. Dekker was born in Wisconsin, in a town called Sheboygan. Todd Dekker, his father, was a basketball coach, so we know how he discovered his passion for basketball at a very young age. Todd served as a coach at Sheboygan Lutheran High School and encouraged his son in this sport. From other information about the family, we know that he has two siblings who are older than him – a brother named John Dekker and a sister named Hannah Dekker.
As mentioned above, Sam Dekker’s father coached at Sheboygan Lutheran High School, which may be the reason why Sam ended up in the same institution because of his high school education. He played basketball with the school’s team under his father’s guidance as head coach of the team and led the team to its first championship ever – the WIAA state title – during his time there.
For his impressive high school achievements, Sam Dekker was honored by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association with the Mr. Basketball Award and named Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year 2012. He was also honored with a nod of recognition and in the same year was voted into AP’s first all-state team and the Parade All-American.
Upon graduating high school in 2012, he would enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. And as expected, he continued to play the sport he had grown to love, playing first, second and third-year basketball for the Wisconsin Badgers before losing his final (graduation) year in the NBA Draft in 2015.
His rookie season with the Wisconsin Badgers earned him recognition as a “Big Ten All-Freshman” team, and the following year he was on the watch lists for both the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award. During the NCAA Men’s Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament of the NCAA in 2015, which was his last season with the Badgers, Dekker was voted the West Region’s Most Outstanding Player.
Career and Stats
Sam Dekker participated in the 2015 NBA Draft and was ranked 18th in the Houston Rockets, with whom he signed his first contract. His enthusiasm to show his potential and talent in the NBA was delayed due to a back injury that caused him to miss the entire 2015 season. Upon his return, he was sent to the D-League to play with Houston Rockets’ sister club, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
When he got his chance at the Rockets, he made sure he grabbed it with both hands. In his first start for the team – a game against the Memphis Grizzlies – he recorded a career-high of 30 points. He was part of a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, where Chris Paul switched to the Rockets in 2017. After a year with the Clippers, he was again traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a player-plus-cash deal where Vladimir Veremeenko switched to the other direction.
