In 2010 the Australian band Tame Impala released their very first album Innerspeaker. In 2019, they not only headlined Coachella but also became the biggest band of the decade in terms of psychedelic rock. With only three albums released, the band’s fan base has skyrocketed to millions worldwide, and with each album, the band has grown even bigger.
The band, founded by Kevin Parker, has additional members including Jay Watson, Dominic Simper, Julien Barbagallo, and Cam Avery.
The Beginning of Tame Impala
The psychedelic music project was founded in 2007 by Kevin Parker, a multi-talented instrumentalist who writes for the band and also acts as a singer.
The band was initially started as a home recording project. However, as soon as he uploaded some of his recordings to Myspace, he attracted several labels. In 2008 he signed a contract with the Australian record label Modular Recordings. Later, Parker hired Jay Watson and Dominic Simper to stage the recordings live.
In 2008 the first EP Tame Impala [H.I.T.S. 003] was released with one of the band’s first popular songs, “Half Full Glass of Wine”, which was one of the Triple J Hottest 100 songs of 2008. The next EP, Tame Impala, was released the same year in October, followed by the Peace and Paranoia Tour 2013.
In 2010 the band released Innerspeaker, which climbed to #4 on the ARIA charts and #144 on the UK charts. Two years later Lonerism was released. It received the ARIA certification: Platinum and BPI Silver. The next album, Currents, released in 2015, was even more successful than the two previous ones that registered ARIA: Platinum, BPI: Gold, and RIAA: Gold.
Band Members Profile
Kevin Parker is the main member of the band, and many people even consider him a solo artist. But the band also has other live members. Here are all those who make up the band:
The band’s frontman, Kevin Richard Parker, was born on January 20, 1986, in New South Wales, Australia. His father was Zimbabwe, while his mother was South African. When he was only three years old, his parents’ marriage ended.
As he grew up, he had a passion for music, as his father also loved music and played it as a hobby. In fact, with his father’s help, he began to play musical instruments. He first learned to play the guitar and then the drums when he was 11 years old, following in the footsteps of his older brother.
At 18, Kevin became popular in the bar scene, although his father had warned him against making music as a career because he thought it would spoil the magic. The problem for him was that there was nothing left to dedicate his passion for except music, so he pursued it until the founding of Tame Impala.
Popular as GUM, Jay was born in Carnarvon on May 27, 1990, and grew up in Northam. Although more popular as a band member, Watson also has a solo career, and he is also a member of the band Pond.
As a solo artist under the name GUM, he has released a number of albums, including Delorean Highway (2014), Glamorous Damage (2015), and The Underdog (2018). With Pond, he has released albums such as Psychedelic Mango (2008), The Weather (2017), and Tasmania (2019).
He has been a member of the band since its foundation in 2007. He was the bass player until 2010 when he became a guitarist and keyboardist.
He was born on January 2, 1986, in Pert, Australia. He attended John XXIII College in Perth, where he met Parker, and the two immediately combined their love of music.
Another creative band member is Avery, who is also a member of Pond and the bandleader The Growl. He is the band’s bass guitarist and backing vocalist.
He joined the band in 2012 as a drummer and background singer. Before that, he was with the French indie-pop band Tahiti 80.
