Thomas was born on May 2, 1986, in Manhattan, New York, the son of parents Terry McDonell and Joanie McDonell. He was born as one of two children of the couple, his only brother Nick is a brother.
The son of a father of Scottish and Swedish descent and a mother who is an Ashkenazi Jew, Thomas McDonell eventually grew up in a family of creative people, as his father worked as an editor for magazines such as Sports Illustrated and GOLF Magazine, while his mother is also a writer.

While his brother followed in his parents’ footsteps to become a writer, he chose the lesser-known path of acting, starting in high school where he attended school performances. After graduating high school in 2003, he went to New York University where he studied and graduated with a degree in theater studies.
He made his acting debut in 2008 and has not looked back since. He has appeared in over 17 films and television shows. As mentioned above, he is also a musician and member of the band “Moon”, in which he performs as lead singer and guitarist. Together with his band he has traveled the country and played at different places. Thomas is also an artist who has exhibited some of his work in and outside the United States.

Thomas McDonnell was born into a family of creative people, but while the majority of his family members have chosen to express their creativity through writing, Thomas has stepped in front of the camera to express his own creativity as an actor. For the actor, it all began in 2008 when he was cast as a young version of the character Southie in the film The Forbidden Kingdom, where he got the chance to play alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
His follow-up project after his momentous debut came two years later, in 2010, in the film Twelve, in which he played a nameless character. In the same year, he played Eddie Boyle in the series Law & Order: Criminal Intentions.
Since 2010 Thomas McDonell’s acting career began to grow steadily, and in 2011 he was cast as the leading actor in the movie “Prom” in which he played the character of Jesse Richter. It was his only appearance until 2012 when he was cast in Fun Size, Dark Shadows, and in the show Suburgatory, where he played Scott Strauss in four episodes.
His most popular role to date as Finn Collins in The 100 began in 2014, with 22 episodes in the series between 2014 and 2015. In the same year he also appeared in 10 Things I Hate About Life, The Devil’s Hand, I’m Obsessed with You.
