Not many players on the PGA Tour have had the opportunity to represent the United States as both amateur and professional, as Webb Simpson has done. He was part of the victorious Walker Cup and Palmer Cup teams in 2007, as well as the victorious Presidents Cup teams in 2011 and 2013, and when you add these achievements to those he has achieved on the PGA Tour, it becomes clear why Simpson has already had a successful golf career.
Webb Simpson Bio
Webb Simpson, whose full birth name is James Frederick Webb Simpson, was born August 8, 1985, in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he grew up. From a very young age, Simpson worked to become a professional golfer and spent most of his time on a number of local golf courses, which eventually led him to receive an Arnold Palmer Scholarship to Wake Forest University.
Before college, however, Simpson attended Needham B. Broughton High School, where he played high school golf. As part of the Wake Forest golf team, Simpson has been named All-American three times. He was also named ACC Player of the Year in 2008, after which he graduated and became a professional golfer.
Webb Simpson first played on the Nationwide Tour, where he twice finished second when he graduated from the PGA Tour’s qualifying school to secure a spot in 2009. The years that followed were grueling for the player, as he was in very poor shape and almost lost his playing privileges. But in 2011, after competing against Bubba Watson at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, Simpson won his first Wyndham Championship in his home state. Another victory at the Deutsche Bank Championships followed a few months later.
In June 2012, Webb Simpson, who had shown a consistent performance since his victories the previous year, won his first major championship – the U.S. Open – and catapulted himself to fifth place in his career. In 2014, Simpson had nine top-ten finishes, including a win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. After that, he experienced another string of victories, which lasted several years until he won the Players Championship in 2018.
His Family, Wife, and Kids
Webb Simpson is happily married to Taylor Dowd Keith, his college sweetheart. The two began dating at Wake Forest University, although the story of how their parts first crossed is a story for eternity. It is said that Webb’s father met Sam Taylor, who was a sophomore, and offered him $100 to go out with his son, who was a freshman. This exchange did not become concrete at first. But a few months later the two apparently became close friends and decided to start a relationship.
Simpson and Dowd met throughout college before finding time for their relationship after Dowd graduated. The couple decided to break things off as Dowd left Simpson at school to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles while he himself was already planning to become a professional golfer with a demanding and hectic schedule.
The former lovers spent an entire year apart without contact with each other before they suddenly got back together. This time they only dated for five months before getting engaged and then exchanged vows in January 2010. Together the couple has four children: Mercy, James, Willow, and Wyndham.
Siblings and Parents
Webb Simpson has had a strong support system throughout his life, from his parents, Evander Samuel Simpson III and Debbie Webb Simpson, to his five siblings, four older and one younger.
The Simpson family suffered a tragedy in November 2017 when their hilarious father, who proved to be a good matchmaker since he was originally responsible for establishing the relationship between his son and his wife, passed away. He died at the age of 74, and the cause of his death was reported as Lewy body dementia (LBD).
Sam Simpson was also responsible for introducing his son to golf, although he never played the game to a professional level. He retained a position in real estate and was Co-CEO of a real estate company in Raleigh, North Carolina – Prudential York Simpson Underwood.
Height and Weight
Webb Simpson’s height is reported to be 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m), while he is reported to weigh approximately 175 pounds (79 kg).
