From Italy to France, Germany, Turkey, and the USA, Brad Wanamaker has played in various professional basketball leagues and has made a name for himself in almost all of them, although he has never spent more than two seasons in any of them. He is now playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Boston Celtics, having received an annual contract in July 2018. Learn all about him here.
Who Is Brad Wanamaker?
Brad was born Bradley Daniel Wanamaker on July 25, 1989, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up alongside his twin brother Brian Wanamaker, who was born 71 minutes before him and is also a basketball player who plays for BC Vytis in the National Basketball League.
Junior Brad, who was born into the family of Brad Wanamaker Sr. and Deborah Samuel, has 3 other siblings in addition to his twin. Since his childhood, the Celt played on streetball courts with his father and brother. They played on almost every court in Philadelphia while they continued to train.
For his education, Wanamaker attended Roman Catholic High School, from where he moved to the University of Pittsburgh, while Brian moved to Central Connecticut State University before moving to Lon Morris College. In the days when he was still playing for his high school, Brad was voted Player of the Year by the Philadelphia Daily News as a high school graduate. More than that, together with his brother, they helped the high school team set a 29-3 record and also helped him reach a place in the national top 20 rankings.
Apart from the fact that the two brothers played together in high school, another interesting thing about the two brothers is that although they didn’t attend the same college, they stopped off in Italy, France, Germany, and Turkey when they played the sports they grew up with.
Although he had a pretty good college career, he did not succeed in getting into the 2011 NBA Draft. Even after he was only the second player in the history of the program with a statistic of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 400 assists. He thus began his career in Italy, where he played for Banca Teramo Basket and Fulgor Libertas Forli from 2011 to 2012. He soon returned to the United States where he played in 2012 in the NBA G League for the Austin Spurs.
The highest French league, LNB Pro A, became his next goal after signing for CSP Limoges, with whom he played from 2012 to 2013. In the following years, he played basketball for Giorgio Tesi Pistoia in Turkey, Brose Baskets in Germany, Darüssafaka S.K. in Turkey, and Fenerbahçe Basketball. In 2018, he was awarded an annual contract with the Boston Celtics.
A look at his college career, which stretched from 2007 to 2011, shows that Brad Wanamaker played 134 games from 68 on. With an average of 8.1 points per game, he averaged 0.2 blocks, 1.0 steals, 3.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds.
He played 94 games in the Euro League, starting at 82 and averaging 29.5, playing for Brose Bamberg, Darüssafaka, and Fenerbahçe. With an average of 13.5 games per game, Brad also had 1.4 steals, 4.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.844 percent free throws per game.
In the Celtics, Wanamaker has no statistics until the start of the 2018/2019 NBA season. Even though it was a pretty long way to the NBA for him, there is no denying that he has been a very fantastic player since his time as an undeveloped player and even before that.
After playing in various leagues, Brad has achieved a number of successes, including the title of Turkish League Champion 2018 and promotion to MVP of the League Final, two-time German BBL Champion, and French Supercup Winner. He was also the MVP of the German BBL finals in 2015 and 2016.
