Americans love their meteorologist, and Ginger Zee happens to be one of them. Certified by the American Meteorological Society, Zee is best known for her work with ABC, a network that gave her the widespread recognition she so richly deserved when she appeared at the Good Morning America Weekend in November 2011. Her affiliation with ABC has helped raise her profile, and Zee welcomed her with arms wide open. She was one of the candidates for the 22nd season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Together with her partner, professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Zee reached third place.
Who is Ginger Zee?
“Ginger Zee” is actually a kind of stage name that everyone has become accustomed to; the TV personality was born on January 13, 1981, in Orange, California, as Ginger Renee Zuidgeest. Her father, Dutchman Robert Zuidgeest, named her Ginger after a character from Gilligan’s Island, a sitcom he watched to learn to speak English. On several occasions, Ginger has spoken about how she doesn’t understand why her father chose the name Ginger. She says her personality is more like Mary Ann’s in the series.
When Ginger turned one year old, her family, including her mother, Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft (nee Hemleb), moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she would spend the rest of her childhood. Her parents later divorced before she ventured into the teenage years. Her mother remarried a certain Carl Craft, from whom Zee got two half-sisters, Adrianna and Elaina Craft.
Ginger decided to become a meteorologist at the age of 8 after she was fascinated by the sight of a water mirror on Lake Michigan. As a child, Zee was anorexic, and after her parents’ divorce it got even worse, but her stepfather Carl, who was a counselor, came to help her get through this phase of her life.
She attended Rockford High School in Rockford, Michigan, from which she graduated in 1999. In 2002 she received a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of Valparaiso, Indiana. She also studied mathematics and Spanish as a major. Zee’s dream after graduation was to attend the Today Show before she turned 30, and she worked hard to make her dreams come true.
Early in her career, she worked for numerous stations in Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, and Michigan. She gained national attention when she worked on NBC’s own WMAQ in Chicago, Illinois between 2006 and 2011. During this time, Zee was asked to step in as a guest meteorologist on the weekend edition of the Today show, making her dream come true.
Her career received a boost when she joined Good Morning America Weekend in 2011. She was later named the Show’s chief meteorologist. After Sam Champion joined The Weather Channel, Zee was asked to replace him as Weather Editor for ABC News.
What is Her Salary?
Ginger Zee’s earnings from her daily work were never published. However, it is estimated that she earns an annual salary of about $500,000. Her net worth is said to be in the region of $3 million.
Family Facts – Husband and Baby
Ginger Zee is a happily married woman. She shares a professional resemblance with her husband Ben Aaron, who is a media personality. Ben, who was born September 10, 1981, as Benjamin Aaron Colonomos in New York City, is best known for hosting the short-lived nationally syndicated comedy television show Crazy Talk. He is now co-hosting the lifestyle talk show, Pickler & Ben, with country musician Kellie Pickler. The show, produced by Scripps, is broadcast on Scripps stations and on CMT.
Ginger met Aaron in 2012 through a mutual friend. Aaron revealed this in a YouTube video he posted before their wedding day. He participated with this friend in a Soulcycle charity event where he introduced him to Zee. After the event ended, Aaron accompanied Zee back to her house through Central Park, a trip that was enough to reassure him that he was in love with Zee. Although Zee wanted to be friends with him, Aaron went even further by asking her out. They were married on June 7, 2014.
The couple has two children together. They had their first little boy, Adrian Benjamin Colonomos, on December 17, 2015, who arrived at 11:05 a.m. and weighed 7 lb. 8 oz. and was 20.5 inches long. Zee’s husband earned his first degree at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 18, he began broadcasting with a radio appearance on Disney. Further radio appearances followed in Los Angeles, San Diego, Tucson, and of course in his hometown New York City.
While working for WNBC as the host of the New York live show in 2009, Aaron won three local Emmy Awards in the category of Best Feature Reporter.
