Jesse L Martin Biography

Jesse L Martin was born on January 18, 1969, in Rocky Mount, Virginia, as the third child of four sons of his parents, Jesse Reed and Virginia Price Watkins. His father worked as a truck driver while his mother worked as a college consultant.

Martin’s parents divorced him when he was a child. Later, when his mother remarried, he and his brothers decided to adopt the surname of their stepfather. The family then moved to Buffalo, New York, where Martin completed his education.

He attended the Buffalo School for Visual and Performing Arts. He also enrolled in an extracurricular theater program where he refined his acting skills and grew out of his shell after being a very shy child. Martin’s talent during high school was visible to everyone when he was voted “Most Talented” in his senior year.

After high school, Martin enrolled in the Tisch School of the Arts’ Theatre Program at New York University. There, as president of Rubin Dorm, he was promoted to a role that is synonymous with the legendary American writer Mark Twain.

After his graduation, Martin began a career in acting. He began his tour of the United States with John Houseman’s The Acting Company before returning to New York to perform where he could find work. At that time Martin appeared in everything from plays at local theaters to soap operas and commercials. He was given a recurring role in CBS’s “Guiding Light”, but in the meantime waited for tables to provide for himself financially.

Martin made his Broadway debut in Timon of Athens before playing Tom Collins in the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent. He also played in ‘The Government Inspector’, ‘Bright Lights Big City’, ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and ‘The Winter’s Tale’, among many other productions.

His stage appearances earned him a reputation in the acting world when he began to get television and film roles. Martin played at 413 Hope St. and the Film Restaurant before consolidating the role of NYPD Detective Ed Green on Law & Order, which he played for nearly a decade. This made him the fifth-longest member of the show.

After leaving Law & Order in 2008, he was hired by NBC as a co-star of The Philanthropist before joining the cast of Smash. In 2004, Martin was again able to take on a role as a police officer in “The Flash”.

In addition to his acting, Martin has done a number of voice-over/narrative work, most notably in the video game “Law & Order: Justice Serves” and the audiobook “On the Shoulder of Giants” and “Volume 2: Master Intelligence and Creative Giants” by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Jesse L. Martin currently lives in Manhattan, New York, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation.
