Who is Luke James?
Luke James was born on June 13, 1984, in New Orleans, Louisiana, as Luke James Boyd, where he was raised by his mother alone. He was introduced to music quite early and draws inspiration from a number of genres, especially jazz and RnB. He combines the beginning of his love for music with the day when he performed a cover version of “A Song for You” for a participant at Showtime at the Apollo. He was carried away by the performance and said he knew immediately that he wanted to entertain. His mother later found her copy of one of Donny’s records and he longed to reach people the way Donny did – through music.
He attended Saint Augustine High School in New Orleans with Thomas Hyde and Quinten “Q” Spears. At the end of the 90s, they founded a trio group called “Upskale”. Frank Ocean happened to go to Saint Augustine at the same time as Luke James. It was Quentin Spears, one of their vocal trios, who introduced him to the man who was to become his long-time manager, Frank Gatson. Frank Gatson was also the director and choreographer of Luke James.

The trio group Upskale separates after the three friends finish high school. Quentin Spears and Luke James formed a duo called Luke & Q and Luke James continued to play under the name Luke The Singer. The duo soon formed the opening act for Tyrese Gibson during a concert, but the two separated soon after they were unable to attract many followers.
Luke James seemed to be doing quite well on his own. He worked harder on the songwriting side of his talent and teamed up with producer Danja to make hits for artists in pop, RnB, and soul. He wrote hits like Chris Brown’s “Crawl”, Justin Bieber’s “That Should Be Me” and Keri Hilson’s “Do It”. Destiny’s Child forced him and other members of the former Upskale Trio to appear in the 2005 Soldier video. Its dynamics did not slow down. In 2011 Luke James finally released a debut album with the extended play (EP), which he called #Luke. He released it as a free digital download and the single “I Want You” received great critical acclaim for its production and Luke James’ vocal performance. It was the single that would earn him a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Soul Train Music Awards. In December 2012, he released another free digital mixtape. It was called “Whispers in the Dark” and began to set the stage for his self-titled debut album, expected by Def Jam in 2014. His album was released on September 23, 2014.
As mentioned earlier, Luke James dream had been the entertainment, and so in 2016, as his career as a singer/songwriter was already established, he went to audition for the role of singer Johnny Gill. He got the role and therefore he played as a singer in BET’s The New Edition Story in 2017.
