Through musical talent shows, we have met some of the best musicians, and Melanie Martinez is one of them. Martinez has been a lover of songs since her childhood. Thanks to her success in the third season of The Voice, she moved into the spotlight as a high school junior in 2012 and finished in the top 6.
Martinez has turned her success on the show into a successful music career. Her songs were certified by the RIAA with gold and platinum. Known for her trademark half-dyed hair inspired by 101 Dalmatians, Martinez is on her way to greater heights.
Who Is Melanie Martinez, How Old Is She?
On April 28, 1995, somewhere in the middle-class business district of Astoria, Queens, New York, a couple of Murcy Martinez and Jose Martinez of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent welcomed their daughter Melanie Adele Martinez to the world. At the age of four, her parents began raising her in Baldwin, New York, on Long Island where they had moved to.
Martinez had a passion for music from a very young age. Even as a child she listened to music from Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Britney Spears, Shakira, and the Beatles. From kindergarten, Melanie began to develop her side of songwriting by writing poems. While attending Plaza Elementary School, Melanie was fortunate to have Mr. Nadien as a teacher who helped her nurture her passion for music.
Nadien taught her how to sing and play the recorder. He had his students, including Melanie, record a Christmas CD which Melanie described to the Long Island Herald as a very exciting experience.
As a child, Melanie Martinez was very emotional and often cried when overwhelmed by her inability to express her feelings. When she gained fame, these early experiences inspired her debut album Cry Baby, a name given to her in those times when her emotions were supposed to bring out the best in her.
At Baldwin High School, at the age of 14, Martinez taught himself to play the guitar. Using the Internet, she was able to download chord diagrams of songs she liked. She tried to make her own music by adding these chord diagrams to the poems she had written.
Martinez wanted to become a professional musician and took the first step toward fulfilling her dreams in 2012 when she was still in high school. This first step was to participate in the MSG Varsity Talent Show. Unfortunately, she dropped out in the second round. Martinez fearlessly improved her singing and kept her dream alive.
Then she decided to apply for the third season of NBC’s The Voice. On the way to the off-air audition, which was an open call at Javits Center, Martinez was driving with her mother when her car broke down. However, they managed to stop a cab and get to the audition in time.
Months later, after this first audition, Martinez was hanging around the Roosevelt Field Mall when she was informed of her progress to the second round. She made it to the blind tests where she sang to court four judges, including Adam Levine, Britney Spears, Ceelo Green, and Blake Shelton. She chose Spear’s Toxic as her favorite song. Three judges besides Spears turned her chair over, and Martinez chose Maroon 5’s frontman.
As part of Team Adam, Melanie Martinez made it into the top 6 before she was eliminated on December 3, 2012. The following year, 2013, Martinez went under the radar and worked independently on her own music. And then came February 2014, when she revealed the product of her years of hard work, a single called Dollhouse. Then she signed a contract with Atlantic Records and released the EP of the same name after the single.
In August 2015 Melanie released her debut album Cry Baby. On December 4, 2017, she found herself in the middle of an accusation of sexual assault. Her former best friend and fellow musician Timothy Heller, with whom she had several gigs, went on Twitter to tell how Martinez had sexually abused and raped her without her consent. Martinez went to Twitter the same day to deny the allegations and explain that she never did anything with Heller that she didn’t agree with.
