Shurmur was born and raised in a family of athletes in Dearborn, Michigan. His parents are Joe and his wife Barbara Shurmur. His uncle Fritz Shurmur served as NFL coach for over twenty-four years. He won the 1996 Super Bowl XXXI with the Green Bay Packers, and his son Kyle currently plays quarterback for Vanderbilt.

2. He Played as a Linebacker at Michigan State University

Pat Shurmur developed a keen interest in playing football at a very young age and began his football career at Divine Child High School when he was still in high school. He then played college soccer with the Michigan State Spartans soccer team. During his time there, Shurmur played both the role of linebacker and guard for the Spartans. In 1987, he was awarded the All-Big 10 Conference and All-American Honors. In his senior year, he led the Spartans to victory at the Rose Bowl.

3. He Began his Coaching Career Since 1988

After graduating, Pat Shurmur began his coaching career, working as an assistant to the Michigan State football team from 1988 to 1989. He then became the Michigan State Offensive Line’s offensive, special teams, and tight end coach from 1990 to 1997. In 1998, he served as an offensive line coach for the Stanford Cardinal football team, and the following year he was recruited by the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League as an offensive line and tight ends coach from 1999 to 2001. He also became the Eagles’ quarterback coach from 2002 to 2008. During his NFL coaching career, Shurmur has been a part of eight playoff teams, won six league crowns, and appeared in the Super Bowl. He is currently the head coach of the New York Giants.

4. He is Known for Developing Quarterbacks

During his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, Nick Flores had an impressive season with the best NFL rating of 119.2, this season he had 27 touchdowns and two interceptions. While Shurmur was the Minnesota Vikings’ tight end coach in 2016, Sam Bradford broke the league record for the completion rate with 71.6 percent. Donovan McNabb also had three Pro Bowl seasons under Pat Shurmur in Philadelphia.

5. He and his wife Jennifer Shurmur have Four Children

Pat Shurmur is a happily married man and father of four children. He married his college girlfriend Jennifer Shurmur; she is from Poughkeepsie, New York, and is also a graduate of Michigan State University. Like Pat, she also worked as an athlete and competitive swimmer during her college years at Michigan State University. The couple was married at a small wedding in 1988. Together they have four children – Erica, Claire, Kyle, and Allyson Shurmur. Just like their parents, Shurmur’s four children are connected through play, and they are very active in sports.

6. His Son Kyle Shurmur is a Quarterback at Vanderbilt

Shurmur’s son Kyle Shurmur is also following in his father’s footsteps; he is currently a quarterback player with the Vanderbilt Commodores at Vanderbilt University. He completed his high school career at the private school in Philadelphia, where he led his school team to a total record of 16 – 6. Kyle was named Pennsylvania State Player of the Year by the Maxwell Club in his senior year. He finished the 2017 season with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and made 220 of 380 passes over 2,823 yards. In addition, Kyle received All-SEC academic awards in 2016 and 2017.
